UFW demands McCarthy vote
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Hundreds of farm workers and protesters marched from Beach Park to Congressman Kevin McCarthy’s office Thursday.
They were demanding a vote on immigration reform legislation, telling McCarthy, "I harvest for 10 hours a day. Can you take 10 minutes to schedule a vote?"
Each participant carried local, handpicked produce and lined the roadway with signs specifying what food each farm worker harvests.
The march was led by UFW President Arturo S. Rodriguez.
McCarthy’s office sent out a statement in response to the march.
"Our immigration system is broken and any workable solution must first start with securing our border. It is unfortunate that protest groups continue to resort to occupy tactics that only seek to disrupt and harass which prevent our office from serving our community," the statement said.
