6th Chavez pilgrimage today
POMONA – The sixth annual Cesar Chavez Pilgrimage will take place this morning starting at City Hall and concluding with a celebration at the city’s Cesar Chavez Park.
The event is part of local activities marking the birthday of the civil rights leader and co-founder of the United Farm Workers union.
Pilgrimage participants will gather at 9:30 a.m. at City Hall, 505 S. Garey Ave., and begin the walk to Cesar Chavez Park, 2720 Barjud Ave., which is near Valley Boulevard and the 57 Freeway.
The celebration will include the participation of folkloric dance groups, music and speakers. Among those speaking will be Chavez’s son, Paul Chavez, head of the Cesar Chavez Foundation.
The event is part of a call encouraging people, particularly the young, to use their skills and talents in the service of others, rather than for selfish purposes or negative activities such as gangs and violence, organizers said.
The pilgrimage is being organized by the Latino and Latina Roundtable of the Pomona and San Gabriel Valleys, the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, San Gabriel Valley and Inland Empire chapters; the Pomona Economic Opportunity Center and the Campus Life Committee of Pitzer College.
