Cesar Chavez garden day brings progress to the community
To the Editor:
We had an excellent turnout for our Cesar Chavez garden day at Redway School. We were very pleased that the weather allowed us to work in the garden together for a few hours. Several Osprey students attended the event, including Scott Hagler, Jesse Spain, and Sheila Avilez, along with students from South Fork High School, Christian Allen and Andreas Hart. The Trash Busters from Redway School, Preston Potter, Shane Kirk, Brittany Rowland, Angelina Hernandez, Acacia Courtemanche, and Sarah Foster were also in attendance along with 4H member Aaron Etherton. The students worked alongside several Youth Serve AmeriCorps members to clean out garden beds and plant fresh vegetables.
We would like to thank Redway Feed and Garden and Sylvandale Gardens for their generous plant donations. Thanks to their donations, we were able to plant a variety of vegetables including, spinach, kale, lettuce, and peas.
We would also like to thank the California Conservation Corps (CCC) for providing garden tools for us to use in restoring the garden. Thanks to donations from Shop Smart and Harvest of the Month, we were able to provide healthy snacks for those in attendance. And finally, thanks to the students and AmeriCorps members who came out to work in the garden. We will continue to work in the garden throughout the spring and summer and are looking for community members to volunteer their time. If you are interested in helping out with the Redway School garden, please contact Amy Termeer at the Family Resource Center at 923-1147.
”We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community … Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own.” – Cesar Chavez
