PITTSBURG–The life and legacy of Cesar Chavez will be celebrated with an awards celebration next week to recognize people in East Contra Costa whose actions reflect the social activism of the labor leader.

The annual event at Los Medanos College includes presentation of three awards.

The LMC Cesar Chavez award for exemplary community service will be presented to Oakley resident and Los Medanos alumnus Arthur Fernandez, and the East County educator award will be presented to Oakley resident Maria Bordanaro, principal of Gehringer Elementary School in Oakley. The Spirit award, which recognizes a young person who is an emerging leader in the area of social justice and advocacy, will go to Bay Point resident Adriana Gomez, who attends Mt. Diablo High School in Concord.

The free event, which is open to the public, takes place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 29 at the Recital Hall at Los Medanos College, 2700 East Leland Road, Pittsburg.
