August 16: Message from UFW President Arturo Rodriguez

On Wednesday August 11, I had the opportunity to attend a meeting in Phoenix of national and Local leaders about SB 1070, Arizona’s new pro-racial profiling law. I was outraged, angry and extremely concerned for our Latino brothers and sisters in Arizona. People shared stories about how men and women are literally being picked up on the streets by law enforcement officers for no reason and being subjected to interrogation. Many farm workers are avoiding the state out of fear of being targeted. The authorities are taking action despite the a federal court’s recent ruling overturning key sections of this discriminatory law. We need to do everything possible to stop the inhumane treatment of Latinos in the United States.
