UFW will urge Congress ‘to move swiftly forward’
on enacting new immigration process
Two days after a bipartisan group of U.S. senators outlined a framework for immigration reform and a day after President Obama stated his intentions the United Farm Workers and UFW Foundation will stage news conferences Wednesday on the Central Coast and in the Central Valley to enlist community support behind convincing Congress “to move swiftly forward on a new immigration process [that] brings long-overdue recognition” to hard working, tax-paying immigrant farm workers.
Those are words from a statement issued Tuesday by UFW President Arturo S. Rodriguez after he and 30 California farm workers from across the state joined President Obama for his address at Del Sol High School in Las Vegas, Nev. Rodriguez applauded the President for insisting “on a clear and unequivocal roadmap to citizenship,” for vowing to proceed with an administration bill “if Congress does not act in short order,” and for not agreeing with grower calls for a new agricultural guest worker visa program lacking strong labor protections.
