Grand Opening of Cesar E. Chavez Park in Tangancícuaro, Mexico also honors local farm workers who helped build Chavez’s union
Tangancícuaro, MX/ and surrounding communities–A newly built park named for the late civil rights and farm labor leader Cesar Chavez and dedicated on Monday, May 26, 2014 at 12 p.m. CST also honors farm workers from Tangancícuaro who migrated to the United States and helped build Chavez’s union, the United Farm Workers of America, the first successful farm workers union in U.S. history. Attending the dedication will be UFW National Vice President Erika Oropeza, local and state of Michoacan public officials, community members and residents. Farm workers from Tangancícuaro helped begin the historic 1965 Delano Grape Strike and participated in many other landmark UFW campaigns.
The park, located in the southern Mexican state of Michoacan, was created as a place for families to exercise and play together. It’s one of hundreds of parks, schools, streets, libraries and other public places named to honor Chavez in the United States and other countries. The park will bear a plaque with a dedication to Chavez with the inscription in Spanish:

The majority of the residents of Tangancícuaro migrate to the U.S., especially to California. They work in table grape vineyards in the San Joaquin Valley and strawberry fields on the southern Central Coast. Following the ceremony, Oropeza will visit local elementary and middle schools in the area to educated young minds on Chavez and the history of the UFW.
