United Farm Workers President Arturo S. Rodriguez issued the following statement from the union’s Keene, Calif. headquarters commending California state Senate President Pro Temp Kevin de Leon’s stand on the pending Evenwel v. Abbott Supreme Court Case concerning “one-person, one vote.”
The United Farm Workers applauds and commends state Senate leader Kevin de Leon’s opposition to overturning the 51-year old “one-person, one-vote” precedent in the current case before the U.S. Supreme Court. This case brought by Republicans is another anti-immigrant tactic and political grab aimed at limiting political influence by Latinos and other immigrant communities.
Not counting immigrants, whether legal or undocumented, as full persons for purposes of reapportionment reminds us of the U.S. Constitution’s infamous Three-Fifths clause that didn’t view enslaved blacks the same as whites for purposes of reapportionment. Overturning this long-held precedent would be tantamount to enshrining discrimination and prejudice in the law.
