UFW wins first major stake in California strawberry industry at Coastal Berry Co.
United Farm Workers President Arturo Rodriguez issued the following statement from the union’s Keene, Calif. headquarters after the state Agricultural Labor Relations Board certified the UFW as bargaining representative for the Ventura County workers of Coastal Berry Co., the nation’s largest direct employer of berry workers. The ALRB’s action on May 4, gave the Cesar Chavez-founded union its first major stake in California’s strawberry industry.
On May 3, we formally withdraw all of our objections to the election involving last year’s balloting at Coastal Berry Co. On May 4, the United Farm Workers was certified as the exclusive bargaining representative for the company’s strawberry workers in Ventura County and that the Coastal Berry Farm Workers Committee was certified to represent the company’s workers in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties.
The UFW fully supports the ALRB’s recent decision creating separate bargaining units for Coastal Berry’s far-flung-work force. We respect the decision Coastal Berry workers made at the ballot box during last year’s election. The ALRB’s ruling has given workers what they voted for.

Now our only objective is seeing strawberry pickers work to produce genuine improvements in their lives through union contracts.
