UFW hands out 10 tons of food to rural farm worker freeze victims underserved by relief efforts
Led by United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta, union organizers in Porterville will distribute 10 tons of food on Thursday to rural citrus worker families in the heart of the citrus area.
Hundreds of families will receive food packages assembled by the UFW that are expected to last about a week. The food supplies were donated by listeners of Radio Campesina, the five-station Spanish language radio network operated by the National Farm Worker Service Center, which was founded in the 1960s by Cesar Chavez. The Valley stations include KUFW 90.5 FM in Visalia and KMYX 103.9 FM and 1310 AM in Bakersfield.
The Tulare County town is in the heart of citrus-growing country hardest hit by last December=s record freeze.
The Thursday food distribution is one part of a major UFW campaign to aid citrus workers who have been thrown out of work by the freeze.
