Three farm worker rallies Sunday feature Gov. Davis and Lt. Gov. Bustamante; thanks offered for historic farm labor bills

Kicking off the final weeks of the fall election campaign, farm workers will rally in Coachella, Oxnard and Salinas to praise Gov. Gray Davis’ record of aiding working families, including his signature last month on historic legislation helping field laborers win union contracts when growers drag out negotiations.

Gov. Davis will appear in Coachella and Oxnard. Lt. Gov. Cruz M. Bustamante will be in Salinas. Accompanying the governor will be United Farm Workers President Arturo Rodriguez and union co-founder Dolores Huerta.

All three events will boost a major statewide UFW drive to turn out Latino voters in key parts of rural California.

On Sept. 30, the governor signed SB 1156, by state Senate leader John Burton (D-San Francisco), and AB 2596, by Assembly Speaker Herb Wesson (D-Los Angeles). The legislation will use mediation to resolve issues blocking agreements on union contracts during bargaining between growers and farm workers.

The schedule on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002 includes:

Coachella–12:30 p.m. rally at the Coachella Valley High School gym, 83-800 Airport Blvd. (at Van Buren), Coachella.

Salinas–1 p.m. rally at El Sausal Middle School, 1155 East Alisal St. (between Eucalyptus Dr. and Towt St.), Salinas.

Oxnard–4 p.m. rally at the Performing Arts Center, 800 Hobson Way (between 7th & 9th), Oxnard.
