Hundreds to march for legalization and driver’s licenses
UFW President Arturo Rodriguez will join hundreds of people from across the San Joaquin Valley on Sunday, June 13 as they march in support of the UFW’s AgJob’s bipartisan federal legalization legislation and SB 1160, the new Calif. legislation that would grant driver’s licenses to undocumented residents.
The AgJOBS bill, S.1645, could be taken to a vote as early as next week. SB 1160 (Cedillo), the Immigrant Responsibility and Security Act (new driver’s license bill) was introduced last week.
UFW President Arturo Rodriguez stressed the urgency of these bills stating, “The rich bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables on America’s dinner tables comes from the sweat and sacrifice of immigrant farm workers who are largely undocumented. They are forced to accept risks no other American workers would endure, they take the hardest, most difficult jobs, they pay taxes but enjoy few benefits. They constantly live in the shadows of fear, making them easy victims of abuse and poverty, having so few of the opportunities the American dream holds out for those who work hard for a living. These hardworking people deserve the right to earn their legalization and to drive safely and legally on our roads”.
Among those joining UFW president Arturo Rodriguez and area farm workers will be elected officials, community leaders and students.
