UFW CALL FOR SUPPORT FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SAFEWAY WORKERS AND THREEMILE CANYON FARMS DAIRY WORKERS.
For more than three months, Safeway and other Southern California grocery stores have been battling their employees in an effort to take away their vital health insurance benefits. In Oregon, Safeway has refused to ask Threemile Canyon Farms to support its dairy workers in their right to be protected by a union contract. Safeway processes milk from these dairies for sale in its supermarkets.
“Safeway has a duty to the communities its serves,” said Erik Nicholson, Pacific Northwest Regional Director for the United Farm Workers of America, AFL-CIO. “This company is failing to live up that that duty, as it has declined to take responsibility for asking Threemile Canyon Farms to support its dairy workers to have a union contract if they so choose to at one of the dairies that supplies it with milk, not to mention failing to negotiate a fair contract for thousands of its employees in Southern California,” Nicholson added.
The mostly Latino workforce at the Threemile Canyon Farms dairies have been trying to reach a settlement with the Farm’s owners for over a year. Instead of negotiating, the company has waged an anti-union campaign trying to intimidate workers and scare them away from supporting the union.
But the Farm’s efforts have failed. The campaign for a union continues as strong as ever. Twenty two workers are currently suing the dairies for minimum wage violations and illegal payroll deductions. Workers have also complained about an on-going campaign of threats and intimidation.
“It simply doesn’t make sense for Safeway, who claims to so value and respect Latino consumers, to fail to request that Threemile Canyon Farms respect the employees right to a union contract.” said Nicholson. “But then you see how they’re treating their own employees, many of whom are also Latino, and it starts to make more sense,” he added.
“ “We need to stand together and send a message to Safeway that it’s not right for them to take our money when we shop in their stores, but then they refuse to take corporate responsibility to ensure the fair treatment of our brothers and sisters,” said Nicholson.
In a recent email action, farmworker supporters sent numerous emails to Safeway CEO Steve Burd. “Please take a minute the next time you’re in Safeway to let them know of your support for striking workers and the dairy workers at Threemile Canyon Farms.”
Jobs with Justice has begun a support campaign for Safeway workers and are asking consumers to not to shop at any Safeway stores for the duration of the Southern California strike. For more information about this campaign, contact the Portland Jobs with Justice office at (503) 236-5573.

UFW HACE UN LLAMADO PARA APOYAR A LOS TRABAJADORES DE SAFEWAY EN EL SUR DE CALIFORNIA Y DE LOS LECHEROS DE THREEMILE CANYON FARMS
Por más de tres meses, Safeway, y otros supermercados, han estado batallando a sus empleados para poderles quitar beneficios de seguranza médica. En Oregon, Safeway se ha negado a exigir el rancho Threemile Canyon Farms que respete el derecho de los trabajadores lecheros de tener la protección de un acuerdo colectivo con su unión.
“Safeway tiene una responsibilidad hace las comunidades que sirven,” dijo Erik Nicholson, Director Regional de la Unión de Campesinos de America, AFL-CIO. “Esta companía no esta cumpliendo con su deber, y han negado aceptar la resposibilidad por las condiciones de trabajo de una de la lecherías que les provee con leche, además de no querer negociar un acuerdo justo con miles de sus empleados en el sur de California.
Los trabajadores de Threemile Canyon Farms, la mayoría de los cuales son latinos, han estado luchando de llegar a un acuerdo con los dueños de la lechería por más de un año. En vez de negociar, la companía ha lanzado una campaña anti-unión, tratando de intimidar a los trabajadores y asustarlos para que no apoyen a la unión.
Pero esta campaña de la companía ha fracasado. La lucha para tener la unión sigue más fuerte que nunca. Ventidos trabajadores estan demandando a la companía por violaciones del sueldo mínimo y por rebajes ilegales de los cheques. Los trabajadores tambien se han quejado de una campaña de amenazas e intimidación.
“No tiene chiste que Safeway, quien dice que valoriza y respeta a los consumidores latinos, no tome acción para ayudar resolver una situación horrible para los trabajadores de Threemile Canyon Farms,” dijo Nicholson. “Pero luego se ve como estan tratando a sus propios empleados, muchos de los cuales son latinos, y se empieza a entender,” agregó.
“Necesitamos ser de una sola voz y mandar un mensaje a Safeway que no es justo que nos cobran cuando estamos de compras en sus tiendas, pero luego no toman las acciones necesarias para asegurar el trato justo de nuestros hermanos y hermanas,” dijo Nicholson.
En una campaña recien de correo electrónico, apoyantes de la unión mandaron más de 1000 correos al encargado de Safeway, Steve Burd. “La próxima vez que Usted este de compras en un Safeway, por favor digales al personal que Usted esta apoyando a los trabajadores en California que estan en huelga y los trabajadores lecheros de Threemile Canyon Farms.
La organizacion trabajajos con justicia ha iniciado una campaña apoyando a los trabajadores de Safway. Ellos estan pidiendole la público que dejen de hacer sus compras en esta tienda hasta que se resuelve la huelga en el sur de California.
