8/12/03-8/17/03: Thousands of farm workers joining UFW-led marches to win driver’s licenses for the undocumented on eve of key Capitol debate

Aug. 12-17 in Central Valley & Central Coast
Thousands of farm workers joining UFW-led marches to win driver’s licenses for the undocumented on eve of key Capitol debate

In the week before final debate on a bill granting driver’s licenses to undocumented residents, thousands of farm workers will show support for the legislation by joining United Farm Workers-led marches in California’s Central Valley and Central Coast. It will be one of the most dramatic demonstrations of community support for the driver’s license reform.

Central Valley workers will march after work on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and at mid-day on Sunday in Kern and Tulare county farm towns. Central Coast workers will march after work on Friday and Saturday, and at noon Sunday in Monterey and Santa Cruz county ag communities. The Legislature returns from its summer recess to take up the driver’s license bill on Monday, Aug. 18.

Everywhere, farm workers will urge lawmakers to approve “the strongest legislation that makes driver’s licenses available to all qualified undocumented workers,” declares UFW President Arturo Rodriguez, who will help lead marches in both regions. Marchers will also demand support from members of both political parties.

“Immigrants harvest food for both Democrats and Republicans,” Rodriguez says. “They work in the hotels and restaurants for both Democrats and Republicans. They care for people’s kids, work in construction and in hospitals for both Democrats and Republicans.  Now everyone, Democrats and Republicans, should support our people’s right to drive and keep the roads safe.” March schedule (details on times and places to follow):
