Sunnyside, WA mushroom workers boycott continues to build
Spokane, WA – Following rallies in Seattle and Tacoma, Windmill mushroom workers will gather in Spokane on April 24th to continue the United Farm Workers campaign to boycott Windmill Farms mushrooms and announce the official backing of the Washington Education Association (WEA).
The WEA, Washington’s largest teachers’ union with more than 84,000 members, approved a motion to stand in solidarity with the United Farm Workers and support a boycott of Windmill Farms mushrooms. The teachers’ union will gather in Spokane from April 24-26, coinciding with the Windmill boycott demonstration, for its annual Representative Assembly to set the organizational priorities for the coming year.
“For over 2 years, workers at a mushroom facility in Sunnyside, WA, now owned by Windmill Mushroom Farms, have been fighting for union recognition,” said UFW President Teresa Romero. Under Washington State Law, agricultural workers are excluded from the right to organize, and there is no legal mechanism to force companies to recognize labor unions regardless of the wishes of a majority of the workforce. Many pro-union workers at Windmill Mushrooms have faced adverse actions, including terminations and conditions that have pressured them to leave their jobs.
The Windmill Farms mushrooms are sold at many grocery stores restaurants across the Pacific Northwest and have been identified by UFW activists at locations in Washington, Oregon, and Alaska.
Any mushroom labeled from Sunnyside, Washington, will be one produced by Windmill Farms Mushroom, as it is the only mushroom plant in the area. Don’t buy Windmill Mushrooms from Sunnyside, Washington!
