Latino stereotypes in the media often center on feisty, passionate, busty Latina women or tall, dark, charming and handsome Latino men. Either way, they’re going to steal your heart. Obviously, any stereotype about any ethnicity is bound to fail when it comes to real life expectations, especially around romance. The only stereotype the media is getting right is the depiction of abuelitos’ grand love in “One Day At a Time.”

We know as much about love as the next person, but we do have some iconic Latino romances of the ages to aspire to. Prepare to get inspired.

Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball

Their infamous on-screen romance in “I Love Lucy” wasn’t all for show. Ball actually advocated hard on behalf of Arnaz to essentially play himself as her marido on television. Executives didn’t want someone with a Latin accent on-screen. They pushed on and have left all sorts of legacies today.

Gloria and Emilio met in the Miami Sound Machine. She was the lead singer and he was the band leader. He was her first and only boyfriend and the two have been married since 1978.

Celia Cruz and Pedro Knight

Cuban sensation Celia Cruz was on tour in Mexico with her band La Sonora Matancera when they decided not to return to Cuba. Castro exiled them in retaliation, but love won. Cruz later married Sonora’s trumpet player Pedro Knight in 1962. Knight cared for her while she was battling and eventually died of brain cancer. He built a granite mausoleum he buried her in that he joined just four years later.

Cesar and Helena Chavez

The two met as farm workers in Delano, CA in the 1940s and their activism brought them together. While Cesar Chavez is better known for creating the UFWA union, Helena was actually the bookkeeper. They were married until death.

While their love story is known for its tumultuousness, the two were married in 1929 and again in 1940 after a very brief divorce. While they had many lovers throughout their lives, they remained committed to each other and inspired each other’s art often.

Moreno’s love life was truly iconic before meeting Gordon (dated Elvis Presley; Marlon Brando was the “lust of her life”). Gordon and Moreno married in 1965 and remained together 45 years until his death in 2010.

Fonsi and Lopez have been together for almost a decade and together have two children.

There isn’t a Boricua alive who didn’t follow these two like royalty back in the good old days. The two were longtime friends before they started dating in early 2004. Lopez had just broken off her engagement with Ben Affleck six months before their swift wedding.

While they have two perfect twin daughters together, the two split ten years later and are now amicable.

While the two only just celebrated their two year anniversary, their very obvious googly eyes for each other is epic. The two originally met while they were still married to their exes. The story goes that they sort of just bumped into each other a few years ago and went on their first date that same night. Of course, Jennifer Lopez gets two great loves.

Carmen Carrera and Adrian Torres

When Carrera and Torres met in the early 2000s, they both identified as gay men. After Carrera decided to transition, they ended their domestic partnership. That lasted not more than a year before they were seen together and married in 2015. Their marriage is the first televised trans-inclusive marriage.

These two have been married since 1994. They keep their personal life very private. He told Al Rojo Vivo that his marriage has been so strong because the two are “friends above everything.”

Callie Torres and Arizona Robbins

Sue me, this is a fictional romance, but it felt very real for every “Grey’s Anatomy” fan when the single Latina character discovered her bisexuality and was disowned by her Roman Catholic father for it. Everyone worked it out, but, dang, we shipped these two.

Eva Duarte and Juan Perón

When they married in 1945, the Argentinian actress was much more famous than her soon-to-be Argentinian President marido. Their love story actually inspired a musical and they were celebrated far beyond her tragic death from cancer in 1952.

Matt and Luciana Damon

According to Luciana’s recount to Vogue, “I was working as a bartender in South Beach … and [his] crew ended up in the bar one Saturday night… Matt’s story is that he saw me across the room and there was a light on me. And [laughing] I’m like: ‘yeah it was a nightclub – there were lights everywhere!’” But really, he was seeking refuge from paparazzi and hid behind the bar with her. Like any Latina, she put him to work, kept all his tips and they’ve been together 15 years since.

These two have known each other since high school. They are not high school sweethearts but their love is very sweet. Since marrying in 2010, the two have welcomed two children together.

Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem

The Oscar winners met while filming “Jamón, Jamón” and married eight years later in an intimate Bahamas wedding. We get to imagine what life is like being so beautiful together thanks to their professional collaborations on “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and “The Counselor.”

After meeting on the set of “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” the two fell deep. They married in Mexico in 2002 and have two children together. Their love is disgustingly cute.

The most beautiful couple alive met while filming “The Place Beyond the Pines” in 2011 and now have two daughters together. You never see them out in public, probably because their beauty and love would kill us all.

Ricky Martin and Jwan Yosef

“I contacted him, and we talked for six months. We were just sending messages, talking about life and existential issues. Nothing sexy, nothing sexual. It’s not that he was sending me sexy pictures and vice versa, I swear. But when I first saw him, I said, ‘I am going to marry this guy.’ And apparently, he said exactly the same thing,” he told Attitude. The couple has been together for three years.

Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello

Did I already say “The Most Beautiful Couple Alive”? It’s a tie. These two fell hard and fast and within six months of dating, Manganiello proposed to her on Christmas Day 2014. They married a year later in Palm Beach, FL, and are all perfect and in love since.
