KGET 17 (CA): Wonderful Company farmworker strike on its fourth day

Wonderful Company farmworker strike on its fourth day

Workers plan to meet this morning

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Farmworkers from Wonderful Citrus plan to hit the picket lines for a fourth day, protesting what they say is an unfair pay cut.

Wonderful says the pay adjustment is because of a transition in harvest from clementines to mandarins. The company says because of the smaller size of clementines this season, workers were paid a premium for harvesting.

Now that it’s mandarin season, they’re back to regular wages.

One worker told 17News Wonderful Citrus has made an offer saying all workers who show up to work today will be get $52 a box– what they were getting paid until last week. But a big group of workers still plan to protest for better working conditions– this includes paid gas mileage for travel.

The United Farm Workers union said they plan to be right along side the workers. They’re meeting this morning in Delano to discuss the next move.
