Santiago Peregrino, who teaches political science and criminal justice at Delta College, is this year’s keynote speaker for the fifth annual Cesar Chavez luncheon.
This year’s event is from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday at Horizons Conference Center, 6200 State in Saginaw Township.
The Chavez luncheon is the American G.I. Forum of Saginaw’s major fundraiser for college scholarships.
Chavez’s exposure to the hardships of the agricultural fields motivated him to organize migrant workers in California and other states. He founded the group that later became the United Farm Workers of America to fight against the tactics of growers.
"We wanted to recognize Cesar Chavez, what he has done for the people," said Eddie Flores, commander of the Saginaw American GI Forum.
Each year, the group awards five to 10 college scholarships, usually $500 to $1,000 apiece, to Hispanic students.
"We usually (raise) between $3,000 to $4,000 from the luncheon," Flores said. "Every bit of it goes toward the scholarships."
Tickets cost $25; call Flores at 754-2131 or 860-7523.
U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Ricardo "Ric" Gutierrez, who recently received the Bronze Star Medal for his heroic achievement in Iraq, will attend the luncheon. A re-enactment of his medal ceremony is planned that day, Flores said.
Elementary students from area schools also compete in an art contest to depict Chavez. The winner will receive $50.
Delta College is co-sponsoring the luncheon, which attracts students from high and middle schools.
