The Latino Network will host the Eight Annual César Chávez Memorial Breakfast Friday.

Raymond Buriel, a Chicano Studies professor at Pomona College, will be the keynote speaker.

Nine states, including California, celebrate the labor organizer’s birthday with state holiday. Chávez first organized in the Coachella Valley before creating the United Farmworkers Union and international grape boycotts to draw attention of the plight of migrant workers. His birthday is March 31.

Buriel, who joined the faculty at Pomona College in 1977, was the founding Chair of the Intercollegiate Department of Chicano Studies at the Claremont Colleges and has twice been selected as a recipient of the Wig Distinguished Professor Award for Excellence in Teaching at Pomona College, according to a press release.

His areas of expertise include: multicultural education; Chicano and cultural psychology and immigration and socio-cultural Change.

Breakfast is $15 at 7:30 a.m. at Zacatecas Café in Riverside.
