Rural nonprofits eligible for grant

The Cesar Chavez Foundation has been awarded a $375,000 grant to fund rural nonprofit groups organizing days of service on special holidays.

The Corporation for National and Community Services announced the award on Monday. The Chavez Foundation will use $125,000 each year for three years to issue grants to nonprofits to organize days of service on the Rev. Martin Lugher King’s birthday, Jan. 15 or on other occasions during the year. The Chavez Foundation is one of six nonprofits singled out for the Dr. King awards.

"Rather than taking Dr. King’s birthday as a day off, the Chavez foundation will help rural nonprofit groups use it and other observances to take a day on in service to others in need," said Gina Rodriguez, the foundation’s director of Community Services.
