Last Friday evening in Salinas was filled with joy and emotion. For the first time, we awarded scholarships to the sons and daughters of farm workers protected by UFW contract. The students who are entering or attending college were so grateful and committed to completing their educations. Hearing their dreams of becoming engineers, teachers, orthopedic surgeons, psychologists and attorneys was a great moment for all who were there. Meeting them and their parents was an honor for me. I wish you could have been there to see the smiles, and tears, on the faces of their parents. I know that the 200 farm workers who gathered with Cesar 50 years ago at the UFW’s founding convention in Fresno would be very proud of these young men and women.
