San Bernadino — The legacy of Cesar Chavez, who worked for years for farmworkers’ rights, was honored Thursday at a memorial breakfast at a school named for him.
"Back in the 90s, (there was) not any recognition for Chavez in the Inland Empire," said Mel Albiso, associate superintendent of the San Bernardino City Unified School District. "The Association of Mexican American Educators and the Kiwanis of Greater San Bernardino put the event together to honor a great, great man."
Thursday morning’s event at Chavez Middle School, he continued, is meant "to bring light to his plight and to make sure that children within the San Bernardino and Colton (Joint Unified) school districts understand the great commitment and sacrifice that people have made on their behalf."
Chavez, said Karen Strong, principal of the San Bernardino middle school, "has an impact on our students each and every day. (This event) reminds me, my staff and students each and everyday why we do what we do. That’s why it’s significant and why we’re grateful for the opportunity to host the breakfast this morning."
Those at the event were treated to a menu featuring tamales, chorizo and eggs, fruit and more, provided by the Inland Empire Job Corps.
