RIVERSIDE: Cesar Chavez memorial to be ready this summer
A monument to labor leader Cesar Chavez will be unveiled on Riverside’s Main Street mall sometime in early June, city officials heard this week.
The exact date was expected to be announced Friday, March 29, at the annual Cesar Chavez Memorial breakfast held by the Latino Network.
The group’s president, Ofelia Valdez-Yeager, told the City Council on Tuesday that fundraising for the project took longer than expected. Supporters had hoped to have the statue ready by March 31, 2012, which would have been Chavez’s 85th birthday.
So far $352,000 has been raised for the project, about $2,000 more than the initial goal, Valdez-Yeager said. But the final cost came in at $425,000, so more money is still being sought. Donations may be made at www.riversidelatinonetwork.org.
