But it wasn’t just fun and games that brought thousands of mostly Latino residents to the Sebastopol Road campus. There was serious medicine and education, too.

“We learned that we should eat five fruits and vegetables a day,” said Roseland third-grader Alyssa Briano, who pledged to overcome her distaste for vegetables so she could be healthier.

Elizabeth Cuevas, 13, has a new goal – helping her dad get his blood pressure below 140 over 90, now that they know his is too high.

Cuevas got an injection that protects against whooping cough and will help her meet new vaccine mandates for students entering grades 7-to-12.

The annual fair is aimed at promoting health and improving access to medical care for underserved, uninsured families. It included more than 50 health care providers who offered dental exams, gave Tdap shots and performed cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure and body-mass screenings. Scores of kids received free bike helmets. About 60 people got free haircuts.

Ten-year-old Montserrat Sanchez said she’ll be headed to a dentist soon after learning during a dental exam that she has multiple cavities.

Her cousin, Daniel Higareda, 8, said simply: “If you don’t stay healthy, bad things can happen.”

“This room has been packed,” nurse practitioner Erin Moilanen said between counseling patients about their cholesterol, blood glucose and blood pressure results.

Several were informed for the first time that their readings suggest diabetes, but “cholesterol was the biggest one,” she said.

“I used to sort of pussyfoot around,” Moilanen said. “Now I tell them, ‘If you don’t take care of this, you could die.’ “
