SANTA ROSA, CA – Hundreds of farm workers and community members are expected to join a march honoring the late labor leader and UFW founder Cesar E. Chavez in Santa Rosa scheduled for Sunday at 12 noon. The march, which is one of several events being held at different cities throughout California, is part of the union’s nationwide immigration reform campaign, ‘Con La Union de Campesinos Tendremos Papeles.’
“Cesar Chavez is no longer with us, but his work and his spirit continue to inspire us and the UFW to fight for better working conditions for farm workers and their families. Both, President Obama and Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis were inspired by Cesar Chavez. Now, they both have made the commitment to help us bring dignity and respect to the men and women who toil in the fields. President Barack Obama spoke recently about how important it is to build a path to citizenship for immigrants who have put down roots in this country,” said United Farm Workers President Arturo Rodriguez.
"The farm worker movement that Cesar began is the root of the Latino political movement. And now, we have a president whose own roots are like ours and whose campaign was rooted in Cesar’s grito, ‘Si se puede! Yes we can!’” he added.
The Santa Rosa march will travel about 2 miles and is open to the public.
