The National Park Service has narrowed the list of possible sites for memorials to farm labor leader César Chávez.
Three of them are in Kern County, where Chávez established the headquarters of the United Farm Workers. The other is the 300-mile march route from Kern County to Sacramento, by way of Modesto, where he promoted his cause in 1966.
The agency is taking public comment until Nov. 14 before deciding which site or sites will be chosen and how they will be managed.
The finalists were chosen from more than 100 candidates as part of an effort mandated by a 2008 law. They include:
• The march route
• Forty Acres National Historic Landmark in Delano, Kern County
• Filipino Community Hall in Delano
• Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz in Keene, Kern County
• Santa Rita Center, Phoenix
Comments can be mailed to National Park Service, César Chávez Special Resource Study, Park Planning and Environmental Compliance, 333 Bush St., No. 500, San Francisco 94104-2828.
E-mail comments can be sent to pwr_chavez@nps.gov.
A Nov. 10 meeting in Salinas also will give the public a chance to comment. It will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the National Steinbeck Center, 1 Main St.
