UFW leader to speak in Modesto
A Hilmar-raised leader of the United Farm Workers will speak Thursday at a Modesto luncheon organized by the Latino Community Roundtable. Armando Elenes, national vice president for the union, will speak on the occasion of its 50th anniversary this year.
Saturday is the birthday of the late César Chávez, who founded the UFW.
The luncheon also will feature talks by students involved in the International Baccalaureate program at Modesto High School and the Project Uplift mentoring program at three schools. The event will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Bel Piatto Italian Cucina, 1000 Kansas Ave. Mexican and Italian food will be served. Tickets are $20 each.
