CESAR CHAVEZ DAY OF SERVICE AND LEARNING: APRIL 1, 2008-APRIL 3, 2008
The Center for Community Engagement and the Center for Multicultural Engagement are proud to host a series of events in celebration of Cesar Chavez Day of Service Learning. Our lineup of events includes a visit from United Farm Worker leader Dolores Huerta, nationally recognized spoken word poet Paul Flores and a Social Justice Poetry Slam. Join us for one or all events as CSUCI celebrates and honors the life and work of Cesar Chavez.
Event: Sacrifice, Opportunity, and Hope: Lessons Learned from the Bracero Program

Join us for a panel discussion exploring the gendered costs of Mexican immigration to and from the United States, César Chávez’ work with United Farmworkers and personal experiences of working with César Chávez. Featuring CSUCI History Professor, Frank Barajas, University of Irvine Assistant Professor in the Departments of History and Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies, Ana Rosas, Oxnard lawyer and activist Barbara Macri-Ortiz and community activist Lupe Anguiano. Refreshments will be served.
Event: Celebrating a Legacy of Service and Conviction
United Farmworkers cofounder and activist Dolores Huerta will speak about her lifelong commitment to service and the importance of individual and community activism. Included in this event will be performances by Inlakech Ballet Folklorico Program and local artist/performer Manuel Unzueta. Food and refreshments will be served.

Event: Voice of a Generation
Nationally recognized Chicano poet Paul Flores will be coming to Oxnard to speak his rhyme. Join us as San Francisco poet Paul Flores, a past performer on HBO’s Def Poetry, weaves spoken word, theater, and hip-hop around issues of social justice. Food and refreshments will be served.

Come learn from nationally recognized spoken word poet Paul Flores, featured on HBO’s Def Poetry Jams, as he leads a workshop for those who want to learn more about performance poetry, hip hop activism and using your words to create social change and impact.

Event: Rhyme for a Reason: Social Justice Poetry Slam
Don’t Mince Your Words, Deliver Your Message, Come Speak Your PEACE at the Social Justice Poetry Slam. Come for a night of words, music and fun. Open mic or sign up at the Multicultural, Women’s & Gender Student Center. MC will be spoken word poet, Paul Flores. Food and refreshment swill be served.
