| Oakland March Marks Cesar Chavez Day |
 OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) — Many people marched to Oakland City Hall Monday to commemorate Cesar Chavez Day.
Chavez was a labor rights activist, who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of farm-workers. He was also a co-founder of the United Farm Workers’ Union. The march began at 9:30 Monday morning with a handful of marchers starting at 98th Avenue and International Boulevard. The route to city hall cut right through the city’s predominantly Hispanic Fruitvale District. The younger students who didn’t have class to commemorate the day say they want to raise awareness about immigrant rights. “We’re all Californians, and we should be treated as Californians,” said one marcher. ”We want to make Cesar Chavez Day a national holiday, and to improve immigrants rights,” said another. They planed to arrive at City Hall for a noon rally. Organizers say they’re walking for dignity, equal treatment, and respect. |
