Arizona Commemorates César Chávez Day, Mar. 31st, By Standing Up for the Rights of Workers Today |

From Rebekah Friend, Arizona AFL-CIO Executive Director, Secretary/Treasurer: “Arizonans have so much to thank César Chávez for. Farm workers, some of the most exploited workers in America, continue to see rising pay and safety at work because of the movement he founded. Today, Latino union members earn on average 46% more than their non-union counterparts. And all of us have been inspired by César Chávez’s enduring message of Si, Se Puede – Yes, We Can. “But some things haven’t changed since the 1960s. Today, all across the country and in Arizona, the ability of working people to earn a middle-class living is under attack. The events in Wisconsin showed that César Chávez’s fight for the rights of working people is not over. “Working families today are honoring César Chávez by continuing to stand up together for what he fought for: safer workplaces, quality healthcare and a voice at work. On April 4th, Arizonans will show our solidarity for workers’ rights at “We Are One” events. In Phoenix, I will join nurses, teachers, workers, civil and human rights activists and people of faith at a public lunch to celebrate the lives of civil rights leaders César Chávez and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “When we stand together for a middle-class life, César Chávez lives on through us.” |
