Above-par turnout expected at event
LULAC golf scramble funds scholarships
This past year, the Wichita Falls chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens gave scholarships to college-bound students from all over the North Texas area.
Those contributions were made possible by a golf tournament the local chapter has hosted for the past several years. On Saturday, LULAC representatives hope for another big turnout at the fifth annual Cesar Chavez Golf Scramble.
"Our organization enjoys doing everything it can to help the local community, and this golf scramble has been very successful in doing that," said Johnny Villastrigo, Council 4604 president. "Last year we gave five scholarships to kids from Rider, Hirschi, Old High, Bowie and Graham. So this helps students from all over the area."
The tournament’s shotgun start will be at 8:30 a.m. at River Creek Golf Course in Burkburnett. Entry fees are $60 per person.
Villastrigo said that fee gives participants a free round of golf on the next visit, plus the chance to win a new Nissan car and two airline tickets from Nissan of Wichita Falls. Golf club bags, a flat screen TV and several other giveaways also will be awarded at various par-three holes throughout the course. A hole-in-one contest will be held to decide the winner of the car.
Hot links and sausage will be provided for lunch.
Villastrigo said the funds raised for the scholarship program would be given to recipients in May. He said the deadline to apply for the scholarships is April 30. Those interested in applying can find information on the Wichita Falls Independent School District’s website.
All area high school seniors are encouraged to apply. A special committee will be formed to pick the winners.
Villastrigo said the golf tournament is just one of many things the LULAC council is involved in.
"We do the Christmas dinners for needy families around the holidays. This year we’re really excited to participate in the Dallas Cinco De Mayo parade," Villastrigo said. "Our goal is to get involved as much as possible and help where we can."
