Thumbs up: César Chávez memorial is appropriate for Coachella
His push for fair treatment of farmworkers is a legacy that should be remembered for generations.
The plan is to establish a monument in De Oro Park, next to César Chávez Elementary School. The monument would chronicle Chávez’s life and his experiences in the Coachella Valley. It would list the names of local people who were part of the United Farmworkers movement.
The park also would be named in his honor.
Local residents who remember Chávez met with city leaders last week at the school. Milly Treviño-Sauceda, who met Chávez in 1975, said, “When he spoke, it was electrifying.”
Those memories should be preserved. Chávez died it 1993. It would be great to see a tribute to him on his birthday on March 31.
Sí, se puede.
