Cesar Chavez Elementary School Holds 16th Annual Cesar Chavez March

SAN DIEGO Students, parents and teachers at Cesar Chavez Elementary School waved signs and banners as they walked in the 16th annual Cesar Chavez March Wednesday.

The organizers of the event in Southcrest say the late civil rights leader and co-founder of the United Farm Workers gave pride and justice to the Latino community.

Cesar Chavez "wanted the best for the children," the school’s principal, Celia Ramirez, told 10News.

Children carried homemade signs and held banners as they walked along the route that took them along 38th and 40th streets, and Alpha and Epsilon streets.

A number of events will be held over the next month to celebrate Chavez, who died in 1993 at the age of 66.

State, county and most city government offices will be closed Thursday to honor Chavez on what would have been his 84th birthday.
